Pioneer of Educational Leadership: Start to Succeed

Hazel Jane C. Cortez

San Antonio, Gerona, Tarlac

All of us should be grateful for the education that we are now receiving. Educational leadership and management allow students to walk freely on their chosen paths towards their success. However, education was never meant to be easy and achievable. There were a lot of challenges, and the educational system back then was not as democratic as it is now. We must be eternally grateful that in our time now, education is for everyone who has the courage, determination, and passion to level up their growth and development. In this article, may we be reminded that there were people who served as a pioneer and leaders in education and one of them is the respectable John Dewey?

His name will be forever marked in the history of education because his leadership and vision seemed to impact the world of education. John Dewey was considered the most significant educational thinker of his era and, many would argue, of the 20th century. He was an American philosopher and educator who was most known for his leadership in the progressive movement in education in the United States.

His stand-in democracy mostly affected the educational system. This is because, in his time, the earlier models of teaching mostly relied on authoritarianism and rote learning, progressive education asserted that students must be invested in what they were learning. But he argued that education must not be done in that way, instead, Dewey's concept of education implies the meaningful activity in learning and participation in classroom democracy. This means that for a student to develop skills, it must be interactive and a collaboration between the teachers. Moreover, he saw learning by doing and the development of practical life skills as crucial to children's education. This movement of his divided the side of other educators because they argued that students would fail to acquire basic academic skills and knowledge under his system. But his stand was firm that the central ethical imperative in education was democracy.

Dewey's leadership in education is one of the best examples of being an effective leader. His stand on what he believes is right is commendable and showed the influence of being a leader. May his story remind every school leader to stand up for what they think is good for the development of their school and take action on the weaknesses their school has to ensure quality education for the students.

The First Three Kings of DepEd: Founding is Leading

May G. De Jesus

Brgy. Suizo, Tarlac City

The colonization here in the Philippines widely influenced the way we act, think, and do things. The culture we originally have has been mixed with other cultures. Their stay in our country made us inferior and that they dominated the way we operate and function. However, in the line of education, it was found out that the first education secretaries who ruled the world of education back then were one of our own and not by other nationalities. They were Filipinos and not Americans.

This knowledge was not known to many. However, let us open our minds to new learning as we dive into the history of the first educational leaders here in our country. Did you know that based on the initial research conducted by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the first three education secretaries were Filipinos?

The Department of Education was founded on June 23, 1898, when the Philippine Revolutionary Government was established by President Emilio Aguinaldo with a functioning government structure designed by Apolinario Mabini. After the foundation of the department, it was only a few months after that the position was filled with a leader who will operate the department and that was the first secretary of education. That first person was Felipe Buencamino whose job revolved as the Secretary of Fomento (or Public Development) with Direccion de Instruccion Publica (Director for Public Instruction or Education). His reign lasted for a year when the research uncovered that after him, Graciano Gonzaga served as the second education chief from January to May 1899. After which was replaced by the third education secretary, Aguedo Velarde who held the position until November in the same year.

Undersecretary for Administration Alain Del B. Pascua stated on the foundation day of the department that, the portraits of the incumbent DepEd Secretary and the first DepEd Secretaries will be enshrined in the lobby of the Rizal Building and be given due recognition and honor. On the contrary, the current Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said that "As an educational institution, we want to make sure that we provide the right information to the public, especially in introducing our heroes, inventors, and pioneers, we have to give them the right and necessary honor in our establishment,”

These three secretaries paved the way for our education department. Hence, the service, time, and passion that they dedicated should be remembered. Thanks to them, the pioneers of our education were none other than Filipinos.

Retaining Excellent Mentorship: School Leaders in Action

Manami Villanueva

Brgy. Maliwalo, Tarlac City

Educational institutions serve as training grounds for students. A school is the best place to go if you want to elevate your skills, knowledge, and personality. Millions of lives enter school with almost nothing and leave a certain school with enough knowledge, excellent qualities, and a good personality. The educational institution has changed the lives of millions of people. Behind all of this story is their diverse experience in conquering all the challenges they encountered inside the school. More than that, they have a mentor who is with them throughout their training grounds. A mentor that never leaves them until they are ready enough to face alone the larger battlefield. The mentor equipped them with enough hints on how to play and survive with the game they enter. Additionally, mentors serve as a source of enlightenment for dreamers, particularly when they are on the verge of giving up.

However, these mentors also need to be well maintained to sustain the production of professionals in the country. Aside from the government, school leaders have the duty of mandating and ensuring that the necessities of teachers together with the students are well supplemented. Like students, teachers also need assistance and enlightenment. No worries because school leaders are always available for their service. Here are the factors that school leaders work on to prevent losing their mentors.

Ø  AUXILLIARY TENSION

Aside from teaching, teachers also serve as a counselor if their students need advice. A second mother to their students that brings enlightenment to them. Teachers' eventual departure will exceed the benefits of fulfilling these tasks, wise school leaders understand. Act as a role reduction rather than a role enforcer.

The school leaders help the teachers in accomplishing their bundles of tasks. Instead of just assigning a task to them and evaluating the effectiveness, they engage themselves in the execution for lighter, easier, and effective outcomes.

Ø  ASSISTANCE FOR PROVIDING MENTORSHIP

Many school leaders and districts start a mentorship program without thinking about how to make it work. A perfect concept will remain useless without executing it effectively. School leaders usually provide memos and conduct programs for effecting teaching. However, common mistakes are they become an audience of their plan after conceptualizing it. An effective leader will finish the tasks until the last outline.

Moreover, school leaders must create a clear path for mentorship to lessen the heavy loads of the teachers. They supplement adequate resources, time, and effort to provide caliber education. More than a boss they are also an assistant to the teachers.

Ø  STANDARD MEASURES

Effective leaders recognize that putting extra pressure on themselves without a clear goal in mind will only lead to more stress and burnout. Instead of complaining, the school leaders should start resolving their issues and duties. Any policy that has a strong, clear, and related purpose can be successful. Teachers' dissatisfaction is significantly linked to the emphasis on test performance. Moreover, losing teachers is tantamount to losing a large number of dreamers.

Ø  ABSENCE OF AUTHORITY

School leaders observe the actions of the teachers; However, it does not guarantee that they need to limit what teachers can do for their students. Teachers want to be in charge of how they carry out their responsibilities. When instructors believe they have little control, they may believe they are unable to do what is best for their students, they may feel abandoned and burned out due to a loss of autonomy and a sense of violating their values. Educational leaders motivate their teachers to unleash their full potential.

Fulfilling this role will greatly benefit the mentorship aspect in school. More teachers, more dreamers, more success.

The success of learning aims to help learners gain a functional understanding of scientific concepts and principles linked to real-life situations. The study focused on the usefulness of Modified Strategic Intervention Materials (MSIM) in improving students’ mastery of Science 7. The researcher developed a teacher made for the pre-test and post-test experimental design. The study's respondents were a total of 30 grade 7 students.

The modified strategic intervention materials used as a treatment for the study covered one of the least mastered skills in Science 7. The t-value of -19.436 with a p-value of 0.001 implies a highly significant difference in the mean before and after using the strategic intervention materials. A negative t-value means that the scores after the intervention are significantly higher than the scores prior to the intervention.

The intervention is done once a week, for one hour every Thursday. It provides high implications for the students with a learning experience that could give them opportunities to harness their scientific skills and values through a simpler understanding of the contents of the subject. The Modified Strategic Intervention Materials are vital instructional materials to improve the performance levels in various learning areas. It is also used to mediate teaching and learning. This helps students learn to perceive difficult lessons as exciting yet productive activities.

We are Capable: What Can Education Do?

No matter where you go and no matter where you are, they say that education is your most important tool in life. This is because of many reasons. It helps us with many things be it with life, with career, with future, and with happiness. Furthermore, the real purpose of education differentiates us from other living beings on earth for education holds what and who are we as human beings. With that, it makes a person the smartest creature on earth as we are the only being granted the ability to expand our knowledge and use it as we like. Importantly, education is what empowers individuals and gets them ready to face the challenges of life efficiently.

Although awareness in education must be spread through the country to make education accessible and for everyone, it is not easy as it seems. Every day or every school year there are still people who can not go to school due to different reasons. Especially in the midst of a pandemic, education seemed impossible for others. While some took a gap year because of online classes, let us put our shoes on those who cannot continue their education because of poverty. Only when people realize what significance it holds, can they consider it a necessity for a good life.

What makes education so important in one's life? The most basic answer is that it is the key to a better future. It is responsible for providing with an enhanced lifestyle because it gives tons of career opportunities that can increase the quality of life. But what most do not know is that education aside from it giving success plays a huge role in uplifting the economy of the country and helping those in the weaker section. Being educated in your country is an achievement and is the most significant piece to change the world for the better. Having the chance to be educated, lessens the illiterate people who suffer the hardships of discrimination, untouchability, and injustice prevailing in the society. With that, if all people can be united and with the help of education, the weaker section can improve their quality of life.

Not everyone is privileged to be educated. There are internal and external factors in life wherein others are not as lucky as any other individual. Let it stay in our hearts and minds that even though we are given the opportunity to be educated, let us not use it to belittle other people. Instead. Let us use what we learned to empower others and help them gain education as well. In the end, sharing is caring, and being kind and compassionate is what makes us truly educated people.

Positivity for a Healthy Well-Being

Health is wealth. A phrase was so common that even a child can hear it anywhere. This phrase was famous for the reason for health is a primary thing that needs to be taken care of and after which everything else follows. Being in a good health means that life is good and in order. However, most people see health as a physical factor only. Eating healthy food, staying in shape, and sleeping at the right time are how others view good health.

But let us face the reality now and learn that good health does not mean the physical aspect only. There is a lot more to learn and we need to be open about it. Having and achieving good health has five constituents named physical, social, and the most important nowadays that everyone needs to be aware of is mental health.

Let us first open the physical health which most of people are aware. Being healthy physically would mean a fit body that has or in the absence of any kind of diseases and illnesses. When a person is in good health, they can function and do things normally and lively. Physical health can be maintained by having a good diet, taking essential nutrients, and keeping the body fit through exercise.

On the other hand, you can say that a person is socially healthy when they can effectively communicate with others, but this does not mean that introverted people are not socially healthy. In addition, a friendly person who likes to mingle with different types of people is considered socially healthy. As long as one does not have a problem in talking with other people, even if it is just one person that means that the social health is alive and well.

Lastly and the most talked about these days, mental health. People should be reminded that Physical Health Alone is Not Everything. There is this ongoing stigma that surrounds mental health wherein people do not take mental illnesses seriously and even make fun of them. To be completely healthy, one must also attain to be mentally fit. However, when people completely discredit mental illnesses, it creates a negative impact. Let us know first the meaning of mental health. This refers to the psychological and emotional well-being of a person. The mental health of a person impacts their feelings and way of handling situations.

Being able to recognize the signs of mental illnesses is a good step in aiding it. A laughing and cheery person does not equal a happy person with a happy life. The taboo surrounding mental health should be eradicated that is why it is necessary to be educated and aware of the happenings. This kind of health needs and deserves the attention it has because every life is important, and everyone deserves to be healthy not just physically but also free from mental illnesses.

Shaping the Hope of the Future

The child of today is the wealth of tomorrow.  It is them who will be the creators and molders of a nation's tomorrow. Those who are toddlers and babies today will be the adults of tomorrow. They are tomorrow's leaders and activists. Their quality and personality will determine what kind of destiny will this world hold. However, their destiny lies in how they will be brought up in this hard and challenging world.

The youth of today serves as a powerhouse to better improve the life that we have now, it may sound so cliché but how they perform now will reflect the outcome of the future. It may sound wrong to directly pass the responsibility of the adults to children, but if adults would not do that, there can be a lot of difficulties to occur. Therefore, children must have adults responsible for them to mold them while they are just shapeless individuals.

These crying and clueless children of today will have a boundless and endless store of energy, will, capability, dream, passion, zeal, enthusiasm, and have the power to mold the destiny of the nation. All people experienced being a child. It is fun and memorable because you get to experience a lot of things without minding the surrounding. Being a child means that you get to be spoiled and cry when you want to. You do not need to act tough and strong just because you are you. Being a child is a fast memory and while we grow up, these memories will slowly fade away and give way to a more mature version of you. Hence, childhood should be experienced by all children of today. The time will always come for everyone hence rushing will not do anything good for everyone. This reminds everyone that adults should stay and act as one while children being children should continue to act like happy individuals.

Little by little, just like how babies take their first step, children should be guided with patience and dedication. How we guide them will surely bloom into a colorful and bright flower that can help beautify this never-ending world. Even though the world is continuously and fast-changing, the fact that children will be the future of the world remains unchanged that is why training, guidance, and the ability to grow in the desired environment will impact them big time. Our creator gave us two hands and a mind that impacts others. So let us use them to carve the future of our leaders.

Never Been Absent: The Unstoppable Presence of Parents in Guiding Their Children

Melody C. Garcia, RN

It’s terrifying to know about criminal cases overprint or broadcast media. What makes it worse than before is youth are the main suspects in an unlawful and inhumane act. It signifies that something is lacking in the regulation of laws in preserving peace and order nationwide. With these cases continuing to rise, are there any shortcomings of others or are we the ones who fail to do our responsibility to ourselves and society?

A person's personality reflects what kind of parental upbringing he or she has experienced. Parental guidance especially during childhood and adolescence is highly recommendable. Childhood is considered the stage where an individual builds their foundation. Try to observe the babies. They will do exactly what you educate them. What they observe in others is what they believe are the proper measures to take. As a result, a parent's absence during this stage will have a significant impact on their child. Failure to follow parental counsel may have unintended consequences that are not immediately apparent. However, there will come a point when the failure will be obvious. Through parental guidance, children build their foundation durably and appropriately. Moreover, it will be easier for the children to distinguish what is wrong and what is right conduct.

Parental guidance is more than the present. It resonates from letting your child feel that they are loved, appreciated, and enough. Parental guidance is like a light in a dark road indicating the right track to take for their child not to get lost in their life journey. Parental guidance is a warning sign. No parents want to see their child fail. Their child's failure will hurt them triple times. As much as possible, their guidance aims to minimize the failures of their child. Parental guidance is directly proportional to the personality and performance of the child. On the other hand, parenting is inversely proportional to committing errors in life.

Adolescence is a crucial time in a person's development. As teens progressed through this stage, their surroundings grew larger and began to alter. People have different customs, habits, and beliefs. As a result, parents must provide sound guidance to their children. One of the most common mistakes parents make throughout adolescent time is allowing their children to do what they want and accept full responsibility for themselves. Teens are prone to different vices during this stage. On the contrary, strict parental guidance is not effective. This will only add pressure to the child. With that, parenting must be observed in an ample effort. Not too much, not less.

During this pandemic, every life became little more than normal. Everybody seems to stay in a four-corner house which is prone to isolation, anxiety, and worst, depression. Again, parenting is one of the remedies to it. Parental guidance is like a rescue boat for your child during this pandemic where most students feel like they are in a sea fighting against the huge waves for them to save their lives. Through right parenting, students can feel the same vibe of learning in a traditional setup. To accomplish parenting to their child, parents play more than one role. The best parents are those who made themselves a friend, a teacher, and even co-fan of their child.

Parenting can also be done even you're not a biological parent. It’s a matter of responsibility rather than a title by nature. Parenting comes in a moderate effort. What is less is bad and what is more, is also bad. Parenting does not need to invalidate the chance of the child to train themselves to be independent. Parenting includes training your child how to stand by their own feet. However, during this training ground, you as a parent do not need to be absent entirely. Watch their growth in a secret and nearest place to them. Trained them but never abandoned them. Your children need you more than you think and more than they say.

Training: Its Impact to the School Leaders

Trizia Rancel S. Mamucod

Namabalan National High School

Principals often undergo a series of trainings and seminars. Their life will never be complete without training. Of course, trainings are vital to their role as a principal because it carves them to be more goal oriented and visionary. Principals do not just fall under the sky; they are raised shapeless and needed to be molded. Having a dynamic and excellent leadership derives from a combination of the right personal qualities and the right leadership training. As a result, these leadership trainings allow schools to nurture and cultivate the principals who play as motivators and big thinkers that will carry the school into the future.

The effects of being a trained leader shows when it comes to productivity, retaining employees and giving them the best opportunities, improve decision making when it comes to opening possibilities in growth and development of the school, implementing the best managing style, and of course it leads to succession.

In this article, let us break down possible topis that are essential for school leaders who are trying to build up their career and improve their style. Also, these topics can also be for anyone who aspire to level up their position and aim for a higher one. First, topics like empowerment can play an important role in the school organization. Understanding and knowing when to delegate, and then standing by your delegation, as well as supporting is one of the most critical leadership training topics that can be applied in schools. Moreover, defining and clearly communicating tasks using the right method and proper explanation, choosing the right management or team, agreeing on objectives and goals, setting deadlines, and supporting the team’s work is a topic that every starter can relate to.

No leader wants to be called bossy hence knowing these basic can lead to an organization that is healthy and responsive. In addition, encouraging a peer-to-peer training can fill the gaps between the principals and its staff. It clearly increases efficiency and confidence, it creates an internal knowledge base, and it fosters institutional memory. Lastly, because of this pandemic, webinars are most used, and it is difficult for leaders to conduct a meeting that is clear because barriers like connection and devices can be a hindrance. But occasionally, it is not bad to design leadership training modules and update unique lesson content. This way, new knowledge, practices, and processes can be established which makes it easy to maintain an up-to-date distribution of information.

Silently Working to Protect DepEd in the Cyber War: The Role of White Hat Hackers in the Computer Management

Thrystan Rel D. Mabutol

Tarlac City

Not all wars occur in the physical environment. That war remains silent and unknown to other individuals. They can be the cold war we are referring or are you familiar with the cyberwar? What about hackers? Did you know that hacking comes in different purposes and styles? Hold on because hackers are not always bad. There are also classifications of hackers. Some of them are the White Hat, Black Hat, and Gray Hat. The White Hat, Black Hat, and Gray Hat are only a few of them. White hat hackers are individuals who are well-known or work for a corporation that values data privacy. The Gray Hat is the next group, which is anonymous but does not hack for malicious purposes. Finally, there are the Black Hats who steal information from users without their permission. Cyberwars are mostly a battle between the White Hat and the Black Hat.

The Department of Education (DepEd) keeps track of the institution's sensitive and confidential information, as well as that of its stakeholders. As a result, staff under computer administration act as white hat hackers to defend DepEd's data privacy.

In the Department of Education, computer management is responsible for a variety of tasks that result in a variety of benefits. Computer management stores more information in an organized matter. Through effective computer administration, information was kept confidential and ready to use. Information for the Department of Education should be saved since it may be needed in the future. It also acts as proof of the Department of Education's accomplishments and resources.

Information that has been digitized is simple to locate and always available. It reduces delays and other issues. It speeds up and smooths out DepEd's overall operation. Furthermore, computer management allows all staff to collaborate and communicate more effectively.

DepEd's operations, as well as its connectivity to a range of sources that present alternative views on a given issue or concept, have been revolutionized by the computer. Another significant advantage of using computers in education is that it increases the quality of work produced by employees. With the aid of computers and technology, they can achieve much more.

Hacking can be both beneficial and dangerous. Those that fall under the White Hat and Gray Hat categories put their abilities to good use by protecting data privacy. On the other hand, Black Hat not only destroys a person's computer system, but also the users and the entire institution. Curiosity is the first step in hacking, followed by abilities, and finally personal character. Hacking is a valuable skill acquired through ICT education that should not be used for deceptive or malicious purposes.

Incorporating Collaboration Practices for Better Administration

Regine Il M. Tolorio

Administrative Assistant III

Did you know that the word Administration comes from the Latin word “administration” meaning giving of help? The administration is vital in all organizations such as the Department of Education (DepEd). In a large institution like DepEd where it benefits lots of people, a lacks of administration will result in failure and it will negatively impact all its broad beneficiaries. The administration is beneficial to the educational organization as well as various segments of society. It performs the governance functions of DepEd.  The National Educator’s Academy of The Philippines (NEAP) and Program Management Service are the accessory offices of DepEd that help them administer its operations.

The National Educator’s Academy of The Philippines (NEAP) is a Department of Education-affiliated organization. It is in charge of providing and transforming professional development for teachers, administrators, and other members of the educational community. The Secretary has a direct line of communication with NEAP. They ensure that teacher and other educational agents' training fulfills the required standards and is developed in a professional manner. It is also tasked with carrying out governance duties. The Director's Office, Professional Development Division, and Quality Assurance Division are all sub-offices that work together to ensure the professional and quality advancement of all DepEd personnel.

Furthermore, professional development programs for the Department of Education's human resources are provided by the National Education Assistance Program (NEAP). In order to facilitate the delivery of quality programs, the NEAP also oversees the Training and Development Information System (TDIS), a component of the HRMIS. The existence of NEAP is proof that the Department of Education works hard to ensure that all Filipinos receive a high-quality education. Given the notion that education has become more of a privilege than a right, knowing that education in the Philippines is of high quality and meets international standards is consoling.

DepEd has a Program Management Service to help them better manage their operations. It consists of the Director's Office, the Project Development Division, and the Project Management Division. The Director's Office is in charge of managing public relations events. They also have connections at the DepEd's Central Office, as well as other Public Affairs offices and other agencies, for issues related to their tasks. On the other hand, Project Development Division is responsible for developing youth formation programs, projects, and activities. They used financial strategies to create and implement events for youths or learners in order to encourage their development. Finally, we have the Project Management Division, which is in charge of overseeing all of the projects.

In addition, the offices under Program Management Services have the goal is to make program and project operations and execution as efficient as possible in terms of planning, application, and resource utilization. The role of the PPMO is to manage, coordinate, monitor, and evaluate capital-intensive and large-scale projects involving two or more units or agencies.

In whatever language does the word “Administration” is translated, its meaning and purpose are indispensable in DepEd. It keeps the DepEd alive.

SBM: SMALLEST UNIT IS WHAT MATTERS MOST

Shan Lorraine P. Magaoay

Pura, Tarlac

A successful school-based management practice necessitates the active participation of all school stakeholders, making it more than just a supplement to existing methods. New curriculum content, instructional approaches, and assessment procedures, according to Van Kirk, Robertson, and Mohrman, are not significant to the efficient transition. They believe that to enhance school performance, struggling schools should implement new approaches such as teaching comprehension, leveraging technology, educating all kids, and providing integrating services. The benefit of school-based management is that it provides local (on-site) tools for changing and improving the current situation. The important point is that, while most decentralized schools had means of improving performance (power, knowledge and skills, rewards and information), only a few of them used them effectively, while others focused on fighting for power and making win-lose decisions to impress the local community.

In the Philippines, the Department of Education’s School-based management (SBM) refers to a strategy to improve education by transferring significant decision-making authority from state and district offices to individual schools. This provides principals, teachers, students, and parents greater control over the education process by giving them responsibility for decisions about the budget, personnel, and curriculum. Through the involvement of teachers, parents, and other community members in these key decisions, SBM can create more effective learning environments for children.

Moreover, implementing School-based management (SBM) carry a lot of advantages as it allows competent individuals in the schools to make decisions that will improve learning; Give the entire school community a voice in key decisions; Focus accountability for decisions; Lead to greater creativity in the design of programs; Redirect resources to support the goals developed in each school; Lead to realistic budgeting as parents and teachers become more aware of the school’s financial status, spending limitations, and the cost of its programs; and, Improve the morale of teachers and nurture new leadership at all levels.

Overall, a good school also makes better use of the information provided within the procedures. These schools benefit from decision-making processes that assist in the development and implementation of performance improvement measures. Annual internal surveys and reports, informal communication, and learning about new techniques are all feasible ways to use the information for improvement to prevent "reinventing the wheel." Using all of the above data to improve educational and teaching techniques have shown to be a highly helpful approach for successful schools. Lastly, to better implement and maximize School-based management, it should consider the function of the principle in effective restructuring initiatives when thinking about leadership. A good principal adopted the position of manager and change facilitator. Still, there was more to say about leadership in the school-based management process, because leadership is shared among the leading teachers participating in effectively reforming schools.

DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF WORKTEXT FOR GRADE 8 STRUGGLING READERS

Jowena Jane F. Sicat

Dapdap High School

ABSTRACT

JOWENA JANE O. FELIX, Tarlac Agricultural University, Camiling, Tarlac, March 2017. DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF WORKTEXT FOR GRADE 8 STRUGGLING READERS

Adviser: DR. ELEANOR G. HILARIO

This study was conducted to develop and validate a worktext for Grade 8 struggling readers at Dapdap High School. The worktext was constructed based on the scope and sequence chart and developed teacher’s manual. The teacher’s manual includes the objectives, domains, skills, procedures with electronic learning websites, and answer keys. The worktext contained 21 lessons with activities for Practice, Assessment, and Enrichment. The domains covered in the worktext include: Word Recognition, Spelling, Prosodic Features, Punctuation, Capitalization, Grammar, and Reading Comprehension.

This study used an Instructional Material Development (IMD) design that focuses on needs assessment, construction, testing, and evaluation. The identified Grade 8 struggling readers, from Special Reading Class during the academic year 2016-2017, were the respondents of the validated diagnostic test and try-out evaluation. The researcher used two instruments for this study; the validated diagnostic test and adopted checklist for the evaluation. There were 5 English teachers who evaluated the worktext in terms of content, vocabulary, structure, and skills. Pre-test, post-test, and try-out evaluation of the worktext were executed to determine the suitability and validity of the developed worktext.

In the process of the try-out of the lessons in the worktext, the English evaluators rated each lesson of the worktext as very suitable with an overall mean score of 4.86. The results show that the developed worktext is very suitable in terms of word recognition, spelling, prosodic features, punctuation and capitalization, grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension to the target users. The difference in the mean scores of the pre-test and post-test in all the seven domains is highly significant. This implies that the developed worktext is a valid and suitable remedial material for Grade 8 struggling readers in Dapdap High School. It was recommended that teachers in English classes may use the developed worktext to cater the needs of struggling readers who are under frustration level and to enhance their reading capabilities.

Backbones of Dreamer’s Home:Quality Management of School Staffs

Mary Grace Bungay

“Teaching is the profession on which all other professionals depend”- Linda Darling-Hammond

With the above statement, teachers are the backbone of education and society in the truest sense. They serve as role models for the students, provide advice and dedication, and teach young people how to learn. Countries can develop socially and economically as a result of teaching. Teachers are only one job that is needed by a school to operate and accomplish its mission. Janitors, accountants, drivers, guidance counselors, security guards, and canteen personnel are the workers behind the success of the school. Hence, aside from their salary, the school staff must also receive quality management.

School leaders must develop open contact with school workers in order to give adequate treatment. Opening lines of communication among school members and staff will provide insight into their needs and demands in order to get improved results and performance in their work. If the barriers are broken, all of the employees will have a closer relationship and link with one another.

It's almost tough to tell if your professors are emotionally and psychologically healthy most of the time. Remind them how vital their contributions are to the school and how much students depend on them for advice. Give them a sense of satisfaction in knowing that their work is important to your school and community.

Don't enforce your school's standards with a heavy hand. Permit your teachers to use their imaginations when instructing their students. Be open-minded about modifications to educational standards if they propose to do so. Allow your teachers to adapt their classroom management tactics. Always raise sufficient funding or budget for classroom supplies before the start of a school year or semester. This strategy will raise your instructors' morale and possibly help your school's reputation.

Rewarding the instructors is a good method to keep their happiness and morale high. Rewarding and incentivizing them will give them the impression that the school values their efforts. Paying teachers on time and making them feel appreciated can provide them with a sense of fulfillment.

Faculty's performance is a critical factor in your school's success or failure. Take the initiative of pointing out teachers who aren't doing their jobs properly. Give them a second chance to prove themselves to be worthy. Only terminate a teacher if he or she engages in unethical behavior that harms the students. The school must defend teachers' rights, such as their privacy and freedom of expression, Parents who harass teachers because their child received poor grades can suffer mentally. Explain to them that the teacher is doing all possible to assist the student in achieving his or her goals.

Teachers are indeed a paragon to their students. However, teachers are humans too that have limitations and require care and attention. Hence, maintaining them is a vital aspect of educational management.

The Role of Social media in Educational Management

Marjorie Joy S. Ordonio

Paniqui, Tarlac

Almost every country's education system is affected by the Covid 19 global epidemic. It generates a lot of delays and stagnation. Education is incorporated in an E-learning setup after various debates. E-learning enters the virtual world, where technical growth serves as a means of connecting people. E-learning has the advantage of not requiring a lot of effort and saving money on traveling. Furthermore, it saves time and increases production without jeopardizing someone's health. Buying electronics, on the other hand, will still be expensive. Another disadvantage is that the academic performance's quality and authenticity are questionable. Furthermore, prolonged usage of electronic devices can result in serious conditions such as stroke, which can lead to death.

Parents, students, and instructors can use social media to learn new methods to share information and establish a community. At least one social network is used by 96 percent of students who have access to the internet. Everything is made feasible by social media, from obtaining a summer internship to spreading a success story about how to win the student-loan war.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of social media in schools. Because students are already online most of the time, it makes perfect sense to leverage the online environment to communicate with them. To observe children of all ages completely engrossed in their smartphones, simply walk into any school or colleague's office. Social media accounts are not just used for personal purposes but educational purposes. Social media offers a wide range of platforms for education like Gmail accounts.

To reach out to students, teachers must be open-minded and use technology themselves. When a teacher is willing to use and adjust their methods as part of the educational process, students respond positively. Students can open up and express their ideas in an online chat about a specific book. Outdated teachers in the new normal setup experience bundles of barriers in their teaching. The technicalities issue is their everyday routine. To give action on this problem, technical assistance and training are given by the instructors. Significantly, the teachers must be well equipped with the platforms used in class for them to teach effectively and smoothly as well as guide their students.

The advantages of social media in the classroom do not end with the teacher-student interaction. Many other advantages can be derived from the use of social networking at higher levels. This might easily be a college argumentative essay topic. However, the advantages are clear, ranging from healthier parent-teacher interactions to permanently altering the way our children learn.

The Pros and Cons of Democratic Outlook in Education

Michelle P. Ganzon

Paniqui, Tarlac

Leadership is considered the child of education. Hence, they work together to produce worthwhile outcomes and individuals. Leadership comes in different styles with their diversity, purpose, strategy, and effectiveness. The Philippines is considered a democratic country that practices freedom on different grounds but with limitations at all times. As a result, even in the educational system of the country, the democratic approach is still incorporated.

Participative leadership, also known as democratic leadership, enables members of a team to participate in decision-making tasks. Anyone in any business, including corporations, educational institutions, and government positions, can employ it as a leadership style. Rather than relying on one individual to judge what is best for everyone, thoughts are shared openly and without judgment; the purpose is to take advantage of the diversity of all ideas.

Encouragement of group members to contribute their thoughts and making group members feel engaged are the fundamental qualities of democratic leadership. Involvement of members and encouragement of them to include others is encouraged and rewarded.

Educational leaders who want to implement this scheme in their game plan must pass the traits and qualifications needed. Democratic school leaders serve as a paragon of good actions to their constituents for others to follow and come up with their ideas. When making a choice, they don't support any ideas and instead allow the majority vote to speak for themselves. Administrators formulate and execute the plan for the general welfare and common good.  As a democratic leader, you must be knowledgeable about your territory and job as well as inform your subordinates for them to provide appropriate feedback.

The democratic leadership style allows school leaders to collaborate with their school staff and members to build open channels of communication that recognize the issues at hand, based on consensus. Instead of relying on traditional methods of completing work or solving problems, it provides additional possibilities to think "beyond the box." It also allows employees to create a strategy for evaluating their performance.

In a democratic approach, educational employees feel that they are a vital part of the organization. If the consensus goes against their instincts, it can be difficult for some school leaders to embrace this technique, but the benefits greatly exceed the drawbacks. Over time, even leaders who do not naturally adopt this style can begin to modify their viewpoints.

Because they dislike making decisions, some employees are less able to perform under democratic leadership. The amount of time required to plan meetings and conversations can be costly to an organization. In a team, there is a risk of relying on differing degrees of knowledge, and some members may be mistaken.

Always Ready to Grab Victory: Back-up of Educational Management

Gina C. Ramirez

For work to be accomplished, it must be completed in a variety of ways. Management includes things like planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization. Managing a school organization is now a lot more difficult, and it requires a particular person to take on the task of managing the entire school and propelling them to the top. As a practicing discipline, school administration focuses on how principals organize their institutions' activities. Specifically, this is to ensure that the given objectives are met effectively and efficiently

Education management, administration, and leadership are interwoven concepts. Achieving a balance between school operations, leadership, staff and student performance improvement, and administrative or lower-order responsibilities is difficult for most school leaders.

All school stakeholders must be actively involved in a successful school-based management approach. They believe that struggling schools should employ new ways such as teaching understanding, utilizing technology, educating all students, and providing integrative services to improve their performance.

School-based Management (SBM) is a system used by the Department of Education in the Philippines to improve education by moving decision-making authority from state and district offices to individual schools. Using data to improve educational and instructional practices has been proved to be a very effective strategy for achieving academic success. Responsible individuals in schools can make decisions that will improve learning; Give the entire school community a voice in key decisions; Focus accountability for decisions; Redirect resources to support the goals developed in each school; and Lead to realistic budgeting as parents and teachers become more aware of the school's financial status, spending limitations, and the cost of its programs through school-based management (SBM).

Teachers are the backbone of education and society. In addition to providing advice and attention to pupils, they teach young people how to learn. The school's success is due to the efforts of janitors, accountants, drivers, guidance counselors, security officers, and canteen staff. In order to provide effective therapy, school leaders must establish open communication with school employees. The quality of your teachers' work determines whether your school succeeds or fails.

They are an important part of educational management to keep in good shape. Being able to pay instructors on time and make them feel valued might give them a sense of accomplishment. Only if a teacher participates in an unethical activity that hurts the learners can he or she be fired.

Edukasyong Pantahan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) is a subject offered to all Filipino students. Unlike other academic courses, EPP will improve students' skills and knowledge, which they will be able to apply in a broader context. It can be used in their homes and in the corporate world. It aims to enhance the sense of responsibility, efficiency, reliability, passion, and excellence.

The EPP course will train students to be productive and make every second meaningful. It inspires students to help their parents with household chores and even earn an income. Instead of waiting for their parents, they will have the initiative to clean their house, cook meals, and take care of themselves through making use of their EPP lessons as their safety measures and guidelines. EPP teaches students the value of contributing to other people’s lives through helping them. Also, it entails self-accountability. The love and care that we need starts with ourselves. Among people in the adolescent age group, taking up the EPP course will guide them to proper hygiene, the things that they can do to avoid vices, and to start building their own empire through livelihood skills. In the pandemic context, skills acquired in the EPP subject can give revenue to the entire family of the students. There are lots of online platforms that they can utilize to sell the products using the skills they’ve learned. One of them is the cooking skills. EPP will allow students to learn different cooking techniques without the need to go to a culinary school.

Moreover, it makes people efficient in all seasons. Sometimes, education is just a waste of money, especially when the outcomes are not visible. Hence, a skill-based subject like EPP will provide visible outcomes that range from simple to complex. For instance, if your child does not care about recycling waste in your home, EPP will open their eyes to numerous possibilities. They make their students efficient in action. They positioned themselves by using all usable resources and converting them into either monetary or aesthetic value. Aside from the brain, it is being resourceful, wise, and ingenious that matters.

EPP will also transform their students into reliable citizens. They are living a meaningful life because they are working hard to achieve their own success, despite the fact that they do not yet have a diploma. Their reliability will also benefit their families. They will not be one of the recipients anymore, but they can also be a sender. As they say, a diploma will not provide you with a job. It is your expertise that matters in the corporate world.

Always remember that theories without application will remain useless. Actions with excellence are still useless. However, if actions are derived from passion, they are definitely acts of excellence.

THE ART, SCIENCE, AND PRACTICALITY OF EPP

There are many stereotypes that the Edukasyong Pantahan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) face. Most students don’t usually pay much attention to them because they are not academic courses. Without them knowing, learning EPP lessons will definitely increase their minds and expertise, which provides numerous immediate and visible results. It gives a set of skills and a livelihood regardless of age and gender. It values time and accountability.

EPP is an art form that contains a variety of realistic lessons. Those lessons are not more about figures and memorization. It is an art because all the concepts are subject to application. The students are like artists of their own in utilizing their EPP lessons in a worthwhile output. The colorful stories of students who seek livelihoods at their age are like aesthetic and pleasing artwork. While the EPP course topics serve as the medium and material for creating a beautiful living artwork. The variety of expertise being taught is like a color scheme that is compatible with another. All lessons create a harmony that aims for student development more than theories but actions.

EPP is regarded as a science. It involves systematic processes. Prior to the full development of the skills of the students, the step-by-step process that students need to take It starts with entering a school and taking skill-based subjects like EPP. After that, it will be followed by understanding the concepts of the skills that are usually under the duty of the instructors. As time passed by, the instructors slowly let their students move independently to make them solidify their expertise more and more. Moreover, all the lessons in EPP involve systematic methods for the accurate execution of competencies.

Lastly, the EPP subject involves practicality. Skill-based learning aids in the integration of real-life experiences and the development of effective communication abilities. It is more practical because the students will no longer need to spend more money on education. They can earn money in the comfort of their own homes or outside, as undergraduates or while working. It emphasizes grit and creativity.

Becoming a Language Expert

Gielaine M. Licuanan

licuanangielaine@gmail.com

The education system nowadays requires school communities to adapt to the changing environment. Global competitiveness has become a part of the goals of many institutions, assuring that the schools can follow the new trends in teaching and learning.

One of the skills necessary to understand the world's curriculum and learn from it is becoming a language expert, particularly in English since it is considered the international language.

According to Bok-Myung Chang of the Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Linguistics, the history of the English language in Asian countries is crucial for understanding the features of English language education in comparison to that of the Inner Circle countries. The historical framework for Asian English is critical for establishing the role of English language instruction in the Asian environment.

For those who want to be a language expert, Matthew Youlden- a polyglot who speaks nine languages, shares some tips that can be very helpful.  The first one is to be motivated in learning the language. It is very important that you really want what you are doing because you can easily learn. Next is to look for a “partner” who is also willing to learn with you. That person can help you communicate the language and express it to someone. Then, before speaking the language, it is also better to practice with yourself alone so that you will feel more comfortable the moment you have to speak in front of people. Another advice given my Youlden is to assure the relevance of the message your speak to what you intend to say. It is also better to talk with people who use the language to learn also from them. Youlden also encourages his readers to enjoy learning the language. He says that learning a language can be both an output-based or performance-based through writing poems, drawings, etc. He also states that in learning a language, you have to “act like a child”. It means you should not be afraid to commit mistakes. Children also lack self-consciousness so they say what they want. It’s the same as the needed behavior to someone who want to learn a particular language, because being too much conscious on what you say may hinder learning.

“Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms. It is about understanding.” William Paul Thurston

Mathematics is an umbrella discipline for all fields concerned with numerical data. Some of them are: Arithmetic, Calculus, Geometry, and Basic Math. Also, this course is integrated into other academic and non-academic disciplines like physics, which is under Science, Economics, Entrepreneurship, and even in the daily lives of individuals.

In 2005, Gallup conducted a study in which students in the United States were asked to choose the most challenging topic in school. Unsurprisingly, mathematics ranked first on the difficulty scale. Most students in the Philippines despise mathematics since they see so many numbers and formulae that they quickly give up. In fact, no matter how we avoid mathematics, we will still encounter it as long as we are alive. Students' learning styles can differ in terms of how quickly or slowly they can learn. The ability of the brain to acquire, interpret, and understand math lessons is an essential determinant for a student's ability to truly learn. However, even if they do their hardest, some people's pace is not cooperating at all.

One of the mathematical issues is that many students go on to more complicated concepts based on unstable groundwork. Mathematics is not a topic where you can skip a step; each one is crucial because if you miss one, the whole thing will fall apart. It takes time, wit, grit, and brilliance before you finally unlock the mathematical problem.

Only when mathematics instruction has a beneficial impact on student learning can it be considered effective. This means that teachers must be aware of their pupils' behaviors and attitudes, as some students may be interested in the subject while others are not. One of the most successful strategies to grab kids' attention is to recognize the necessity of employing materials and visual representations to generate a profound understanding of the courses.

Depending on whether they commit to efficiently teaching the material, the teacher's image can be either favorable or negative for the students. Although mathematics is a challenging topic to learn, as long as professors demonstrate their abilities in problem solving, scenarios, concepts, and even in the real world, students will retain at least some of what is taught to them.

Mathematics is a great way to develop mental discipline while also encouraging logical reasoning and mental rigor. Furthermore, understanding the topics of other educational courses such as science, social studies, and even music and art is dependent on mathematical knowledge.

THE SLUGGISH TRIUMPH OF FILIPINOS ON HEALTH CRISIS

KAITHLENE MAY GRAGASIN SOBERANO

Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the link between diet, health, and disease. To understand how foods affect the human body, nutritionists apply concepts from molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. Ingestion, absorption, assimilation, biosynthesis, catabolism, and elimination are all part of the process. Nutritional science is the branch of science that investigates the physiological processes of nourishment.

Malnutrition, in all of its forms, poses a serious hazard to human health. Malnutrition is a double-edged sword that comprises both undernutrition and obesity, particularly in low- and middle-income nations. People who receive appropriate nourishment are more productive and can help to break the cycle of poverty and hunger over time. This information sheet looks at the dangers of all forms of malnutrition, beginning with the earliest stages of development, and how the health system can respond both directly and indirectly.

Malnutrition claims the lives of 95 children in the Philippines every day. A third of Filipino children are stunted, meaning they are underweight for their age. After the age of two, stunting can be permanent, incurable, and even lethal. Children's survival and development are also threatened by low immunization rates and a lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitary services.

Nutritional health can help protect against malnutrition and diseases, including obesity, diabetes, and cancer. A well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products will help your immune system stay robust and healthy for years to come. A diet high in protein, moderate in carbohydrates, and low in fat will help you feel better. Eating correctly gives you more energy, allowing you to be more active. Two-thirds of adults who consume fruits and vegetables on a daily basis report having no mental health problems. Our lives could be extended if we ate diets that were high in nutrients and low in processed foods.

The high incidence of consumption of diets high in saturated fats, sugars, and refined carbohydrates contributes to the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes globally, which may be the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. The elderly, underrepresented minorities, and those with pre-existing medical issues are the most vulnerable. People should be more aware of their eating habits than ever before.Proper nutrition during the pandemic phase is one of our weapons against the risk of death posed by COVID 19.However, adequate nutrition support is an illusion for most Filipino families.

THE UNDYING PASSION TO SERVE

ARCHE PORTACIO REBOLLO

A school is a small scale of society that was created by a particular individual or organization to meet some of the most basic human needs. Also, a school is a pleasant home, a sacred temple, a social hub, and a training ground where students are educated and prepared for their future lives.

It is a right to have unimpeded access to education and a well-mandated educational system. As a result, there isn't a single school that doesn't have a management system in place. For the school, a management system is both an expense and a source of revenue. It necessitates monetary considerations, effort, and time. In exchange, it provides various benefits, including academic growth, academic excellence, academic and non-academic sustainability, and, at some point, additional resources, as well as boosts its charisma and reputation. It considers all components of the school, such as rules, materials, and human resources, programs, activities, and equipment, and weaves them together into a cohesive whole.

Moreover, the school aims to reflect and preserve essential principles such as integrity, excellence, and transparency. They trained their learners to be principled citizens of their country. Just like most of the sayings indicate, education is a great cure for ignorance, a medicine for several societal infirmities, and a powerful tool to change the world. Hence, schools prioritize effective management to come up with a reasonable decision. These educational plans will be put into action in a given time frame. Additionally, school management is expected to deal with social change through its flexibility and dynamism. School administration wished to spread and gain knowledge through experience, which was similar to the goals of education.

In the most current issue, school management is all forced to embrace technological advancement. This is because of the fact that the traditional way of education has been slowly shifting into a more advanced method such as online learning. The pandemic is living proof that all educational processes necessitate technological means.

Lastly, school management molds and shapes one's personality and values. Education in the phase of a pandemic taught both learners and instructors a set of values. This includes accountability, for mostly self-learning is involved. Cheating has been widely open to students, but as they cheat on their studies, they are losing the values of self-love as well as self-growth. The school's management imposed commitment and passion as they constantly assessed the changing situation and tried to implement strategies and tactics that would benefit learners and instructors.

ON THE VERGE OF FREEDOM

With more than one month to go, the whole Philippine archipelago will conduct a new but significant event that will either change or not change the lives of Filipinos. On May 9, 2022, all registered Filipino voters will have the opportunity to vote for the candidates they believe are the most qualified for the open seats. The winners of the national election will be in charge of our country's governance.

Is it time for the Philippines to invert the triangle that Bamboo refers to in his song "Tatsulok"? and eventually bring an end to the oppressed classes' delight while others on the other side of the triangle suffer terribly. Do you believe the name you intend to write on your ballots is the one we need? Before making a decision, research the track records of the candidates we have, as well as the country's historical and present status quo, from reputable sources. Social studies will definitely help you.

Social studies is a subject that all Filipino students are required to learn in school. Human behavior, relationships, resources, and institutions are all studied in this discipline. Geography, anthropology, economics, history, sociology, political science, and civics are among the topics covered. The goal of social studies is to assist young people in making educated decisions that benefit society.

Students learn social science skills that will help them succeed in life. The main goal of social studies education is to teach students to be responsible citizens. Whether studied individually or in conjunction with history or political science, economics is an important component of social studies. Students can use their understanding of prior decisions to make informed decisions regarding present challenges. Students might also benefit from nonfiction sections in social studies textbooks to help them improve their higher-order thinking skills.

Elections and voting behavior are studied in social science in order to shape involvement in political processes such as elections. Using various ideas, social scientists are able to affect the social environment by informing legislators, policymakers, and others about the changing behavior of their voters.

Voting allows citizens of a country to have a say in who represents them in government. The voting process in the Philippines is usually posted by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). A voter who is eligible to vote registers, researches candidates and issues, locates their polling location, and then casts their ballot. Filipino citizens, 18 years old and above, are eligible to register to vote.

The history of voting in the Philippines is recounted in social studies, which began the equal treatment of men and women. Previously, only men were allowed to vote since they are more powerful and have more privileges than women. With the passage of time, this ideology was completely supplanted by equal access and voting rights for all people, regardless of gender.
